Diagnostic Case Report Criteria

DIAGNOSTIC CASE REPORT CRITERIA:

Dear ED643 Students,

I'm sure that your students are grateful for all that you've done for them. As you continue to work closely with them with the various reading sessions (especially during next semester), they will READ with a more positive disposition. Keep up the instrumental work, and don't forget that you must include the following in your diagnostic case report before it can be approved:

1. For the interview with the child, it is not enough to list the child’s responses. You must also analyze the responses to describe what the data reveal about the child’s perceptions of him/herself as a reader and writer.

2. Determine the independent, instructional, and frustration levels on graded word lists, oral reading of narrative and expository, silent reading of oral and expository, as well as listening comprehension.

3. Compare these levels and analyze the data to describe the child as a reader in the conclusion of the report. Ensure that you also summarize the child as a writer in the conclusion. List and describe the recommended strategies for both reading and writing.

4. Provide an analysis of the miscues that the students made on the graded word lists and the passages. Read the section in the QRI-4 on how to analyze the miscues.

Do your best to include the aforementioned, so that you can prepare a quality Diagnostic Case Report to share with the parents. Good luck!

Best regards,
Dr. Rivera

Be kind whenever possible

Dalai Lama Quote
When we are faced with too many challenges at work, it is impossible to smile.  It is hard to keep our resolve to be gentler, kinder or less harsh.  I feel my students anxiety as our day progresses -- the absence of air conditioning does not help.  Tempers flare and words are said. This quote is for me -- to remind me that no matter what the circumstances are, it is always possible to be kind.

Communication is the key!

On our first face to face meeting, as we went over the assignments and requirements for this class, I got a knot in my stomach. It is overwhelming just knowing what we need to do. However, Dr. Rivera made it more comfortable when she stressed the fact that we are all here for each other and we are all here to help one another. Communication is very important to us as teachers as well as the students we educate on a daily basis.

PUT YOUR MIND INTO IT

The Truth About Success

"When you want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe, then you'll be successful"

We are at the start line. We have been conditioned through various methods and lengthy assignments.  Now it is time for us to exhibit what we are made of.  I am aware of the challenge that is before me but I see it not as a grueling process, but rather a ramp to launch my reading specialist career.  As a professional athlete prepares his entire life for their moment to make it pro, this class is that moment in which we shine.

My Personal Mantra

"So please, oh PLEASE, we beg, we pray, Go throw your TV set away, And in its place you can install, A lovely bookshelf on the wall."
— Roald Dahl, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Thanks God  the first week of school is over! It was quite overwhelming and extremely challenging to go back to my usual routine. It is also an arduous task to help my students get back on track. Some of us were so glued on television this summer we overlooked to read our  books. It would take some special tricks to spark my students' reading interest. There is no reason to fret we still have a long way to go. This year my goal is to encourage every child in my class to read at least one book every week.

"Promise me you'll always remember..."

"Promise me you'll always remember: you're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think." A.A. Milne, Winne the Pooh

After yesterday's session, the expectations of the course and the tasks that appeared so overwhelming at first did not seem so daunting anymore. I also know that I can always rely on the support of my colleagues and group mates. There is one hurdle though, that I feel we still have to face -- that of finding a child with a parent who will commit to our project wholeheartedly and who will not back-out in the middle of the semester. Identifying struggling learners is not a problem. We have quite a number in our school.  Convincing parents to agree -- that is another story all together.
Tell me and I’ll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I’ll understand. Chinese proverb

As I was reading through numerous quotes, this one really caught my attention. It reminded me of what Dr. Rivera had mentioned during class. She said this class is going to be challenging - it will be a lot of work, but it is something that we have to go through and experience to accomplish our goal of completing this Masters program. So, I thought that this quote is very fitting for what we will do in this class during this semester…because although we can listen to lectures, see and watch others administer assessments, at the end of it all, participating in the complete process of administering, diagnosing and providing recommendations/implementing interventions to a struggling student would be the best way to learn what we all need to know as Reading Specialists…

"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own, and you know what you know. And you are the guy who'll decide where to go. " - Dr. Seuss

If we want something, we have to seek it, search it, work for it, and choose to make it or break it. I thought this quote would be quite fitting for all of us considering we are all striving to get to the same place - the end of the rainbow!!!

"Employ your time in improving yourself by other men's writings, so that you shall gain easily what others have labored hard for." Socrates

We all start from some place. Even coming from the womb, our innate ability to function kicks in upon birth. As we mature, we gain knowledge and experience from both nurture and nature. With this said, I am exciting to take the knowledge I have gained in my life and training to help those who have a need for my particular skills. Hopefully through imparting my knowledge with others, especially through the bond that will soon develop.
